Ladies, it’s the first ever women’s retreat! Join us Nov 11-13 for a weekend of rest and relaxation at Osprey Point Retreat & Conference Center, Royal Oak, MD.
Colleen Gallagher is joining us and will teach from the Book of Haggai. You may know that our theme this year is “Waiting the Lord,” drawn from Psalm 130. In the book of Haggai, Israel have finally returned to the promised land after years of waiting on the Lord for deliverance from captivity in Babylon. Back in Jerusalem, it might be the promised land, but there seems to be very little promising about it; they’re still waiting. They had begun to rebuild their own homes and businesses and to establish their state but had neglected the construction of the temple and, in their distraction, failed to acknowledge the Lord as the provider and defender of all their hopes and dreams. In the midst of profound discouragement and these misplaced priorities following the return from exile, the prophet Haggai sounded a call of exhortation and encouragement to his community. Through Haggai, the Lord asks his people to consider their ways.
At the Women’s Weekend Away, we will take a look at what God’s word says about our priorities in life. Are we placing other priorities over God? Are we pleasing ourselves before seeking to please God? Are we waiting well? “Consider Your Ways” will take us through the book of Haggai in order to help us freshly discern the depth of our commitment to our Lord—and restore it for his glory. There will be three teaching and worship sessions followed by discussion groups. Prayer will be available.
Saturday afternoon will be free for exploration of Osprey Point’s lovely grounds or the cute surrounding towns of Oxford, St. Michaels or Easton. Ride the ferry! Take a nap in a hammock! Bring or borrow a bike! Go antiquing! Grab a kayak! We’ll watch the sun go down over the bay with a glass of wine. Price includes Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner, followed by brunch on Sunday all prepared by Osprey Point’s chef.
All payments are due by Nov 6, 2011. Please register online using this form and email Hahna with questions.
After service fellowship at Advent is evolving! This Sunday, September 25th after the service, we’ll have the first of our Feast Days, where we will come together to share a full meal after the service and celebrate what God is doing in and through our community. Please bring a dish to share in the potluck and linger awhile to hear what’s going on in Church of the Advent.
Every Sunday after the service we’ll have coffee, tea and refreshments downstairs. If you can bring some baked goods or a simple snack to share, fantastic! If not, come anyway! This is a great opportunity to meet people, catch up with friends, and show off your baking skills.
The next Essentials class is on Friday, September 30 from 7:30 -9:30 pm and Saturday, October 1 from 9:30am -1:30pm at the church office (2000 P St NW, Suite 410). This class is for all who are interested in membership at Advent. Space is limited to 12. For more information or to sign up please email Kaitlynn.
Advent Women are happy to host Paige Benton Brown for a teaching session at National Baptist. She’ll speak to us, have us to open our Bibles, and share a time of fellowship.
Paige Benton Brown (M.A. Covenant Theological Seminary) is a native of Cleveland, Mississippi. She completed a masters degree at Covenant Theological Seminary after graduating from the University of Mississippi. Paige served on staff with Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) at Vanderbilt University for many years, and again at the University of Virginia. In between campuses, she was a teacher on staff at Park Cities Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas. After a couple of years in New York City, Paige and her husband, Reagan, now live in the Washington D.C. area with their three young children.
She is famous in some circles for this article: Singled Out by God for Good . She is also rather well known because Tim Keller called her the best bible teacher in America right now. So, clearly, this event is a privilege for us. She’ll teach from the Old Testament on our theme: Waiting on the Lord.
Invite friends! We’re organizing heavy hors d’oeuvres so women can dodge in straight from work. Keep an eye out for a sign-up sheet about to be shared on the women’s list serve. Email Hahna with questions or for info.
